Rebutia pygmaea is a species of plant in the genus Rebutia from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

Rebutia pygmaea grows singly and only rarely sprouting with spherical to depressed spherical or elongated cylindrical bodies. With a diameter of 0.5 to 4 centimeters, the bodies reach heights of up to 6 centimeters and have a strong beet root. The 9 to 15 ribs are barely divided into humps. The areoles are circular. The central spine , which can also be missing, is protruding and short. The 2 to 11 radial spines are white to brownish. They radiate laterally, lie against the surface of the body or protrude slightly and are 2 to 6 millimeters long.

The yellow to golden yellow, orange, orange-red, pink or purple, rarely also flamed flowers are 1.6 to 2.7 centimeters long. The spherical fruits are greenish and have a diameter of up to 6 millimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Rebutia pygmaea is common in Bolivia in the departments of Chuquisaca , Oruro , Potosí and Tarija and in Argentina in the provinces of Salta and Jujuy at altitudes of 3200 to 3800 meters, where it grows in the puna vegetation.

The first description as Echinopsis pygmaea was published in 1905 by Robert Elias Fries (1876-1966). Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Rebutia in 1922 . The type is very variable.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
