Charles Herbert "Red" Ruffing (born March 3, 1904 in Granville , Illinois , † February 17, 1986 in Mayfield Heights , Ohio ) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball .
Red Ruffing lost four toes on his left foot in a mine accident as a teenager. The pain never left him, he said, and the injury slowed his pace. In professional baseball he went from outfielder to pitcher . He made his major league debut on May 31, 1924 with the Boston Red Sox . Ruffing was not particularly noticeable on a weak Red Sox team in the 1920s and only delivered average performances.
In 1930 the New York Yankees signed him , as their manager Miller Huggins saw in Ruffing a reliable thrower who, with the support of the Yankees' offensive, could be a valuable part of the team. In his 15 years with the Yankees, he won the American League title seven times and the World Series six times . From 1936 to 1939, he won at least 20 games each season. He was also unusually successful as a batsman for a pitcher. He had to skip the 1942 and 1943 seasons because of his army service, but did not get back to his usual form after his return to baseball. After joining the Chicago White Sox in 1947, he ended his active career.
Ruffing was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967, the last year he was eligible. On July 10, 2004, the Yankees erected a plaque for him in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium .
