Reeth Swing Bridge

Reeth Swing Bridge

To the west of the village there is a strikingly elaborate pedestrian bridge over the Swale, the Reeth Swing Bridge . It was first completed in December 1920 after years of negotiations in order to offer the children of the tenant farmers south of the Swale a safe route to school in Reeth. At that time, two thirds of the construction was financed by the affected farmers, the rest of the district was taken over. The bridge was destroyed on September 19, 2000 by a tree trunk floating in the river. Although school children no longer needed to walk and the bridge now mainly serves tourist interests, it was rebuilt largely true to the original by 2002 with the support of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
