Thilogne is a town in the department of Matam the Matam region , located in the northeast of Senegal .

Geographical location

Thilogne is located in the north of the Matam department, not far from the border with Mauritania , on the left southwestern edge of the 19 km wide alluvial plain that accompanies the border river Senegal and is criss-crossed by impassable wetlands and watercourses. The longest watercourse that runs through this plain is the Senegal branch, Diamel , which in parts forms a network of confusing branches and leads past the outskirts of Thilogne.

Thilogne is located 437 kilometers northeast of Dakar and 50 kilometers northwest of the Matam regional prefecture

history

Thilogne was founded in the 13th century and proved to be a strategically good location. The place became its first capital in 1776 when the Fouta Toro Empire was founded . In 1996 the village of Thilogne gained commune (town) status.
