The Reformed Church (also commonly St. Margaret Church ) in Ilanz in the Surselva in the canton of Grisons is a Grade II listed Evangelical - Reformed church in the middle of Städtli and preaching church of the Reformed congregation . There is also the historically significant St. Martin's Church .

history

Originally there was a Marienkapelle at the current location of the church in the town, which is mentioned in 765 in the will of Bishop Tello . A second church building from 1288 was under the patronage of St. Margaret , but fell victim to the city fire of 1483. The late Gothic new building from 1494 falls in the pre-Reformation period , while the construction of the nave with wall paintings with numerous motifs, especially the figure of death, dates back to the early days of the Reformation .

The church was renovated in 1934 and the last time it was restored in 1986–90. The steeple with hipped roof is separate from the church. It has served as a bell tower since 1438 and was at times also used as a castle-like defense tower. It is believed that the tower is identical to the disappeared Brinegg Castle. The ringing consists of five bells and dates from 1932.

Furnishing

The choir is characterized by a differentiated and branched network vault. In addition, there is a sacrament niche from the founding time and in the center an octagonal baptismal font from the time before the 14th century. The pulpit dates from the time after the Grisons turmoil in 1669, the organ from 1760; it was installed in 1990 with its opulent prospectus . In the choir there are choir stalls from the 17th or 18th century.

The pictures in the vaulted ceiling were uncovered during the renovation in 1934. The symbols of the four evangelists are painted in the middle, the representations of death in the spandrels, in which death is not depicted as a skeleton, are striking. They are dated 1518.
