The Reformed Church Balgrist is an Evangelical Reformed church building in the Weinegg district in Zurich . The church is located at Lenggstrasse 75 , not far from the Burghölzli Psychiatric University Clinic , the Balgrist University Clinic , the Schulthess Clinic and the Hirslanden Clinic .

history

Since the nearest Reformed Church in Neumünster is a good two kilometers away from the area on the city limits to Zollikon , the Reformed residents of this area wanted their own church nearby. In 1945 a limited competition took place among four architects from the community, which the brothers Hans and Kurt Pfister were able to win. The church was built between 1950 and 1952. The facade of the church was renovated in 1997.

Building description

Exterior

The Balgrist Church is built at a prominent point at the confluence of the Lenggstrasse and Forchstrasse. The ensemble consists of the church, the free-standing bell tower, parish center and rectory. The church tower was built as a campanile with large open sound windows and a small saddle roof as a conclusion. The nave also has a gable roof and is connected to the campanile by a canopy. The parish hall with a large theater hall is built directly onto the church on the south side. Reliefs in the entrance area depict an angel and people in need; they come from Robert Müller . The five-part bell was created in 1951 by the H. Rüetschi bell foundry . It has a total weight of 9039 kg and sounds in the tone sequence B ° of 'es' f 'as'.

inner space

The interior is aligned lengthways and has a gallery above the small vestibule . A slightly raised area at the northwest end of the service room contains the Lord's Supper table , pulpit and the organ console . Above the table of gifts there are four small colored glass windows with depictions of the four evangelists , which were designed by Friedrich Reinhard Brüderlin. The church interior is mainly illuminated by three floor-to-ceiling window strips in the north-east wall. The liturgy zone is divided by columns that support the organ above.

organ

The key element of the interior is the organ front on the north-east wall, which consists of three incomplete rows of pipes. It is surrounded by circular openings in the wall, which contribute to the visual and acoustic aesthetics of the organ: the actual organ is located behind the wall. This construction method led to opposing opinions from various experts, ranging from “useless” to “very good solution”. When the organ was set up in the closed, poorly ventilated organ chamber in 1952, before the newly built church could dry out, this led to damage to wood, felt and leather as well as corrosion of contacts. The instrument, built by Orgelbau Goll , has two manuals and a pedal with 20 registers , 2 extracts and 3 transmissions. In 1966 the organ builder proposed a general overhaul, in 1991 an overhaul was carried out by the builder Goll.
