The Refuge de Bayssellance , also Refuge Adrien Bayssellance , is a refuge in the French Pyrenees , at an altitude of 2651 m , on the eastern slope of the Hourquette d'Ossoue, at the foot of the Vignemale . Along with the Refuge de Tuquerouye, it is the tallest and oldest of the working Pyrenean huts . It is operated by the Bordeaux section of the Club Alpin Français .

history

The name comes from Adrien Bayssellance , Mayor of Bordeaux and Pyreneesist, president of the Bordeaux section of the Club Alpin Français in 1878, who took the initiative for the construction in 1899. Like the Refuge de Tuquerouye , which was built earlier , the original stone overnight hut was built with a massive pointed arched vault construction (pointed floor technique). Only materials that were available on site were used. The hut had only a few window openings. The construction plans were drawn up with the participation of Henry Russell and Henri Vallot (Centralian Engineer, cousin of Joseph Vallot ).

Later extensions (most recently in 2001) were either lengthways or crossways. Little remains of the original construction, but the original style has been retained.

Access

The hut is the responsibility of the Bordeaux section of the Club Alpin Français. It offers 58 places in summer and 31 places in winter and is accessible from Cauterets via the Vallée de Gaube, then the Hourquette d'Ossoue from Gavarnie , via the Vallée d'Ossoue .

The hut is the base for excursions, hikes in high mountains and glaciers, mountain skiing, to the Vignemale massif (normal route over the Glacier d'Ossoue ), to the Petit Vignemale , to the Petit Vignemale- Pique Longue intersection , to the Pic de Sède , to Montferrat, etc. It is located on the GR 10 long-distance hiking trail and the Pyrenees high hiking trail .
