The Snezinnya Regional Landscape Park ( ukr. Регіональний ландшафтний парк Знесіння) is the largest park in Lviv , Ukraine . It is located in the northeast of the city and can be reached in 20 minutes on foot from the town hall and the market square (Ploscha Rynok). Together with the High Castle Hill (Wyssokyj Samok), the park's hills form the characteristic silhouette of Lviv.

Inside the landscape park is the historic village of Snesinnja ( Zniesienie in Polish ), which is named after the holiday of Ascension and is one of the first settlements in what is now Lviv.

The status of the park as a regional landscape park corresponds to that of the protected landscape according to German environmental law . According to the Ukrainian environmental legislation, the park combines recreational and leisure opportunities with environmental education and environmental protection.

The park was founded in 1993 on the initiative of the NGO “Snesinnja”. This has been campaigning for the protection of the largest green area within the Lviv urban area since 1990.

The Snesinnja Park covers an area of ​​312 hectares . The highest point in the park is the Lewaberg (Löwenberg) with a height of 389 m. The limestone there contains fossils that are around 20-25 million years old .

In the heart of the park lies the “Kaiserwald”, which was created during the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the 19th century. The “Kaiser-Pass” footpath, popular with park visitors, leads through the forest, which consists mainly of pine , spruce , birch and oak .

On the grounds of the park there are also rare plant species, sandstones, streams and a small lake that was created by sand excavation and is used for fishing. The Chomezberg (306 m) in the east of the park is characterized by steppe vegetation . Other geographically relevant places are the "Stara Strilnycya" park as well as the Stefana and Baba mountains and the Hlybokyj and Chomec streams.

Historical places

The Snesinnja Landscape Park is home to a large number of historical places. In addition to relics of Ruthenian settlements, churches, monasteries and an old cemetery, there are also industrial buildings from the beginning of the 20th century and a substation from the times of the Soviet Union .

Significant archaeological sites are the relics of fortified settlements on Bababerg from the 9th to 11th centuries and the 13th centuries, settlements on Svitovydove field from the 10th to 11th centuries and the foundation walls of a defense tower from the 13th century on which Today the Greek Catholic St. Elias Church from the 17th century stands.

The mass military grave of the Ukrainian Sitzh riflemen in the old Snezinnya cemetery (19th century) is the only military burial in Lviv that was not destroyed after the Second World War . There is also a grave of prisoners from the Thalerhof internment camp in the cemetery .

On the grounds of the park, in the Shevchenko Grove, there is the open-air museum for folk architecture and rural life , which is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Lviv. In addition to a comprehensive ethnographic collection, examples of Ukrainian architecture from the 17th to the 20th centuries can be seen here.

Other architectural and religious sites include the St. Adalbert Monastery from the 16th century and the Ascension Church (early 20th century), an alcohol and pharmaceutical factory that were built at the beginning of the 20th century .

Freetime activities

The Snesinnja Park has a pleasant microclimate and offers numerous recreational and leisure opportunities. In addition to circular hiking trails, an asphalt bike route, a skate park , a zip line system and some fitness equipment, the park offers a toboggan run, a ski slope and the opportunity to fish.

There are railway tracks on the grounds of the park, on which historical trains run at irregular intervals.

Environmental education

The park's educational center is not far from Vysoky Samok and Levaberg. It was built as part of an international project in cooperation with the cities of Sanok ( Poland ) and Vienna . Seminars and training courses in environmental science and environmental management for schoolchildren and students take place here regularly. Environmental camps for children and young people are organized in summer.
