Lac d'Orient

At the heart of the nature park are three artificially created lakes, which serve as retention basins for the Seine and Aube, prevent Paris from being flooded when the water flow is high , and compensate for the maintenance of shipping when the water flow is low . They are connected to the respective river by inlet and outlet channels.

  • Lac d'Orient (surface: 24 km², volume: 205 million m³, Seine river system, commissioning: 1966)
  • Lac d'Auzon-Temple (surface: 20 km², volume: 148 million m³, Aube river system, commissioning: 1990)
  • Lac Amance (surface: 5 km², volume: 22 million m³, Aube river system, commissioning: 1990)

The lakes are located in a section of the wet Champagne (fr: Champagne humide) and are surrounded by dense forests and wetlands . While a nature reserve has been set up in the Lac d'Auzon-Temple area , the other two lakes are heavily used for tourism and sport. The edge areas of the nature park are mainly in the area of the dry Champagne (Fr .: Champagne Crayeuse) and are mainly used for agriculture.
