The Regional Computing Center (RRZE) is the IT service provider for the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . As part of the regional concept, it also supports the University of Bayreuth , the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg , the Technical University of Nuremberg and the University of Coburg . The Ansbach and Hof universities and the Nuremberg Protestant University also belong to the extended service area. As part of cooperations, it also provides services for the DFN , the city of Erlangen and the municipal IT service provider of the Kommunal-Bit metropolitan region. As an interface between research and technology, the RRZE sees itself as a center of computational competence in the Franconian university landscape and as a partner to science.

Research projects

In addition to the operation of large parts of the IT infrastructure, research projects are also carried out at the RRZE. These include projects on:

general Services

The RRZE also operates services that can be used generally. Including:

  • The FTP mirror ftp.fau.de is among other things the primary or secondary mirror for openSUSE , Ubuntu , Knoppix , and other well-known GNU / Linux distributions. In addition to the FTP servers in Berlin and Paderborn , the FTP server at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is one of the most frequently used servers in Germany. In March 2016, the average traffic was well over 6 TB per day.
  • The four Stratum 1 NTP - time server ntp0.fau.de to ntp3.fau.de serve to synchronize its own clients to the atomic clock time. Many widespread clients, but also operating systems, access this server.
  • With the IRC server irc.uni-erlangen.de, the RRZE is an important partner in the IRCnet .
  • The Training Center for Information Technology Erlangen (SITE) offers students and university staff inexpensive training courses in software and (web) technologies. External people can also take part in many courses (at a slightly higher price).
  • Various high-performance computers are available to scientists at the university and the universities affiliated with the regional concept for solving numerical tasks. A team of experts in high performance computing works closely with these customers to support the porting, optimization and further development of programs .
  • For several years now, the RRZE has been publishing daily statistics on access to official websites, network utilization and high-performance computers. Due to the high number of accesses to the web offers of around 100 million per month, the distribution of the browsers used is a particularly valuable data source for web developers.

Special

In December 2005 the RRZE was awarded a golden bee in the category "Education, Science and Research" for its website .

The data center is one of the most important German supercomputer centers. The Woodcrest Cluster, which went into operation in November 2006, was ranked 329th among the 500 most powerful computers worldwide in November 2007 .

For many years, national and EU-wide tenders have been carried out jointly at universities and colleges across Bavaria, which are geared towards the procurement of the IT infrastructure. The result is extensive framework agreements with IT manufacturers and suppliers who a. enable the economical procurement of computer workstations with standardized products. The tenders have contract values of several million euros across all participating universities. The RRZE coordinates these tenders for the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Bavaria cloud

The Bayern-Cloud is a joint initiative of the Bavarian Ministry of Science and the Bavarian universities and is funded until October 2020. With the Bayern-Cloud in the final stage, the more than 400,000 members of Bavarian universities - students and employees - will be provided with a service to store data, access it from anywhere ("sync") and make it available to other users for processing ( "share").

As part of the Bayern-Cloud, the RRZE operates a central cloud solution based on the Powerfolder software for the colleges and universities in northern Bavaria. Employees and students at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) can use 50 GB of free cloud storage. National scientific projects and working groups can also upload sensitive research data to the FAU's own cloud with full access control.

The cloud solution is offered in cooperation with the Leibniz Computing Center (LRZ). The LRZ is responsible for the southern Bavarian region.
