For 2006, the conditions of participation were revised: Instead of content-related categories, the BIENE 2006 were rated according to the functionality and complexity of the offers. The categories were written out

  • Information and communication offers (e.g. topic portals, daily media, forums)
  • Research and service offers (e.g. timetable information, catalogs, databases, model computers)
  • Purchase and transaction offers (e.g. bookings, reservations, payments)

in two levels of complexity (simple / complex).

Internet users also had the opportunity to suggest offers. The submissions were checked in a complex, multi-stage test procedure and evaluated by a specialist advisory board. The actual award was made by a prominent jury. The award ceremony took place on December 8th in Berlin at the ewerk . 376 pages participated, 25 finalists remained after the technical tests, and in the end 19 winners were awarded.

BEE competition 2009

In the 2009 competition, the first prize, the BIENE in gold, was awarded to the Internet site of the Manufactum department store. The requirements for the awards have been increased. While in the early years the focus was more on meeting technical standards of accessibility, this year the winners were challenged on the technical level as well as in terms of design and content. In contrast to previous years, the award winners were less likely to be found at the large public institutions and authorities that are legally obliged to make them accessible. According to the press spokesman, they would wait for the new version of the BITV. In contrast, a number of municipal providers were among the winners this year. The winners were selected from over 300 nominations.
