Former Hotel des Alpes

The district of Reichenbach bei Meiringen in the area of the communities of Schattenhalb (village of Willigen ) and Meiringen in the canton of Bern in Switzerland is located on the alluvial land between the Aare gorge and the village of Balm in the south of the Aare and Meiringen.

Reichenbach consists of a few residential buildings, hotels and industrial buildings. This is where the Schattenhalb power plant and the valley station of the Reichenbachfall cable car are located . The Reichenbach saw already existed in the middle of the 19th century and used the water of the lower Reichenbach falls to operate the saw with a water wheel.

The Willigerbad (also Reichenbachbad ) mentioned in 1509 received the concession to operate the bath in 1681. In 1846 the Willigerbad, now called Reichenbachbad , burned down completely. In 1862 the spring at the foot of the slope was covered by a rock fall and only recaptured in the 1950s. As part of the bathroom expansion, the Hotel des Alpes was built in 1862 , which was replaced by a new building in 1901 and converted in 1916 with the Hotel Reichenbach into today's private clinic in Meiringen . Reichenbach has the only thermal spring in the canton of Bern. The water in the current borehole, just a few meters from the original version, has a temperature of 21 degrees.

From 1912 to 1956 the Meiringen – Aare Gorge tram ran from the Meiringen train station to Reichenbach to the valley station of the Reichenbachfall Railway and to the entrance of the Aare Gorge .
