Reiner Eiden (born July 26, 1932 - † July 31, 2018 ) was a German physicist. From 1981 to 1997 he was Professor of Meteorology at the University of Bayreuth .

Life

In 1952, Eiden began studying physics and mathematics at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. Eiden wrote his diploma thesis entitled "On the possibility of using quartz oscillating crystals for the direct stabilization of the pulse repetition frequency of voltage sawtooth oscillators" under the direction of Werner Herzog. He completed his studies in 1960 with the diploma examination. From 1961 Eiden was a research assistant at the Meteorological-Geophysical Institute of the University of Mainz, where he dealt with problems of atmospheric energy and radiation transfer. Between 1962 and 1967 he made several research trips - u. a. to Greenland ( Camp Century ) and Hawaii ( Maui Island ) - to collect data on the atmosphere with a self-developed measuring device. In December 1966, Eiden received his doctorate from the Institute for Meteorology at the University of Mainz under his doctoral supervisor Kurt Bullrich . Topic of the doctorate: "Measurements and calculations of the spectral sky radiation near the sun with the help of new experimental and theoretical methods".

In 1969 Eiden took part in the Atlantic expedition with the research vessel " Meteor ". From 1972 he was an assistant professor in Mainz. In 1973, at the invitation of the National Science Foundation , he went to the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder in the US state of Colorado for a year of research . Back in Mainz, Eiden completed his habilitation in the subject of meteorology at the University of Mainz with a habilitation thesis entitled "Fourier representation of the electromagnetic radiation coherently scattered by homogeneous, spherical particles". In April 1975 he was awarded the Venia Legendi for the subject of meteorology by the natural science departments of the University of Mainz. He then worked as a private lecturer (1976–1978) and professor (1979–1981) at the University of Mainz. In June 1981 he was appointed to the University of Bayreuth in order to represent the subject of meteorology in the newly created geoecology course, which he helped to build up in the following years. He did his job for the establishment of the Bayreuth Center for Terrestrial Ecosystem Research (BITÖK). Until his retirement in 1997, Eiden dealt with the influence of natural and man-made dust particles on the atmospheric radiation field and carried out measurements on the measuring surfaces of the University of Bayreuth in the Fichtel Mountains .
