Pure Bontius
Reinier Bontius (also: Regnerus de Bondt ; * 1576 in Leiden ; † June 23, 1623 ibid) was a Dutch medic.
Life
The second eldest son of Gerard Bontius was enrolled as a student of literature on February 12, 1590 at the University of Leiden at a young age . Here he had especially studied philosophy, mathematics and astronomy under Rudolph Snellius . At the request of his father, he occupied himself with the same, Johannes Heurnius and Petrus Paviuswith the medical sciences. After he had defended his medical treatise Theses de Pleuritide on August 28, 1599, he received his doctorate in medicine on August 16 of the same year and on October 11 of that year received an associate professorship in philosophy at the Leiden University. In addition, he gained a certain reputation as a doctor, so that the curators of the Leiden University decided to appoint him on February 8, 1606 as an extraordinary professor of medicine.
In 1617 he became a full professor of medicine, and in May 1621 he was appointed personal physician to Prince Moritz of Orange , with the later professor of medicine Adrianus van Valckenburg (Adrianus Falcoburgius; 1581-1650) continuing his lectures. He was also involved in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater from 1619 to 1621 . He did not leave any medical writings. However, he has a description of the siege of the city of Leiden from May 27th to October 3rd, 1574 under the title Verification en Ontzetting der stad Leyden, divorced in the year 1574. Beginning on May 27th, and ending on October 3rd. He found his final resting place in St. Peter's Church in Leiden .
