Reinhard Dohrn (born March 13, 1880 in Naples , † December 14, 1962 in Rome ) was a German zoologist. From 1909 to 1954 he was the head of the Naples Zoological Station .

Career

Dohrn was born the son of the zoologist Anton Dohrn . In 1899 he graduated from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich . After his father's death in September 1909, he took over the management of the zoological station in Naples that his father had founded . When Italy entered the war, he emigrated to Zurich in 1915. When he returned to Naples in 1921, both his private villa and the zoological station had been confiscated. Only after six years of dealing with the authorities, with which the philosopher Benedetto Croce supported him, was he able to return to the institute, no longer as the owner, but as an employed director.

Even after the Allies landed in Sicily in 1943 and Mussolini was deposed, Dohrn was able to remain as director of the institute in Naples, although he had to struggle with many problems. His private villa was damaged in air raids on Naples, while the institute remained largely unspoiled but faced economic difficulties. In the last days of the war he went to Sorrento with his family , the work of the institute was continued by his Italian staff. However, the water basins with the marine fauna were endangered by the destruction of the Neapolitan power station and could only be kept functional with difficulty by the institute's own generators. After a short period of American confiscation, the scientific work continued, also with the help of funds from the Royal Society of London , the Rockefeller Foundation , UNESCO and grants from the American military government.

After the war, the institute held conferences on marine biology topics under his leadership in 1948, 1949, 1951 and 1953. In 1954 he handed over the management of the institute to his son Peter Dohrn.
