Reinhard Grunwald

Reinhard Grunwald (* August 21, 1942 ; † March 21, 2020 ) was a German lawyer and science manager . From 1996 to 2007 he was Secretary General of the German Research Foundation (DFG) in Bonn and Managing Director of the Center for Science Management in Speyer .

Life

Grunwald studied law at the Universities of Göttingen , LMU Munich and in Berkeley (LLM). After his legal clerkship in the district of the OLG Celle (1970–1973) he received his doctorate in 1974 in Göttingen with a dissertation on "Immorality, illegality and dolus malus: Types and guidelines of the decision, developed on the bank liability for credit measures."

Between 1974 and 1978 he was Head of Human Resources at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching . Between 1978 and 1984 he was the commercial director of the German Primate Center in Göttingen. In 1984 he moved to the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg as commercial director . Between 1996 and 2007, Grunwald was Secretary General of the German Research Foundation until his retirement due to old age. Since then he has been "executive director" of the Center for Science Management (ZWM) in Speyer. He was a member of the University Council of the University of Freiburg and the Board of Trustees of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.

Grunwald has also worked for the Weitnauer law firm since 2007: lawyers, auditors, tax consultants, and later also in his own law firm, Grunwald Rechtsanwälte.

His main areas of activity were scientific law and contract law. He published in the field of international legal protection and science management and was co-editor of the journal for science law.
