Kößler is a development sociologist and theorist with a regional focus on Southern Africa and Eastern Europe . In his work he examines different development paths and post-colonial societies from a global sociological perspective and reflects on the concept of development on a general level. He has presented studies on the post-colonial state, on despotism in modern times, on ethnicity and on international civil society and solidarity (with Henning Melber). With Hanns Wienold , he reconstructed the question of “society in Marx” sociologically and took it up anew. His studies on German colonialism in Namibia , its current consequences and the disputes around it (2005; 2015) are based on archive work, ethnological field research at festivals, rituals, as well as places and practices of remembrance. They were received worldwide and in Namibia. From 2000 to 2002, Kößler was the spokesman for the Development Sociology and Social Anthropology section of the German Society for Sociology . He has supervised dissertations from Africa and Latin America. He was a founding member and member of the editorial board of PERIPHERIE magazine . Journal for Politics and Economics of the Third World (since 1980). He is involved in networks on post-colonialism and in particular in the questions of apology and compensation for the Federal Republic of Germany for the genocide in Namibia and the return of human remains stolen during colonialism to the Herero, Nama and other affected groups.
