Reinhold Heidenstein (* around 1553 in Königsberg , Prussia ; † December 24, 1620 in Sullenschin , Royal Prussia ) was a Prussian diplomat, lawyer and 1583-1611 chronicler in the service of Duchy Prussia as an agent (commissioner) for the Polish crown .

Life

Reinhold Heidenstein began studying at the University of Königsberg in 1566 , moved to the University of Wittenberg in 1571 and went to Italy to the University of Padua in 1577 . After 1581 he traveled on to France and came into contact with the Margrave Georg Friedrich the Elder of Brandenburg-Ansbach .

In 1582 Heidenstein became secretary to King Stephan Báthory , and in October 1583 he became the agent (commissioner) of Georg Friedrich von Brandenburg-Ansbach at the Polish court. After he was granted Polish citizenship and his Frankish nobility title was confirmed, he joined the Grand Chancellor Jan Zamoyski and also held a position under King Sigismund III. Wasa , as well as continued this office since 1605 under Joachim Friedrich von Brandenburg . However, his influence at the Polish court declined after Zamoyski's death, so that in 1612 he retired from his offices on his estate. In 1612 he resigned from office and went to his estates in Sullenschin.

Heidenstein's importance is not only in the political field, he was also, albeit partisan, one of the most valuable chroniclers of his time. Since he backed up his descriptions in Latin with official material, it is still important today.
