After graduating from school, Reinhold Petermann trained as a printer in the Sobernheim print shop in what is now Bad Sobernheim . He made chess pieces and wooden figures for Christmas cribs.

In 1946 he was released and returned to Germany. At the age of 21 he began studying sculpture at the Landeskunstschule Mainz , which he graduated from in 1951. His fellow students included Inge Blum and Heinz Hemrich . Then he was a master student of Heinz Müller-Olm and Emy Roeder . From 1952 Petermann worked as a restorer in the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz , and from 1965 as a lecturer at the Institute for Craft and Art Education for Sculpture and Life Drawing at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz .

Work and style

"Lark Boy" fountain

The woman and the female body are the main motifs of his artistic work. In addition to the larger-than-life representations in public space, there are also many smaller metal sculptures in his work. Their size fluctuates around 30 to 50 cm. Here, too, the motif of the woman can often be found, whether in a standing, sitting or lying pose. In addition, he created representations of animals such as horses, tigers and birds.

There are also relief works in which, among other things, the female figure was incorporated into an iron plate. Among the works in polyester there are mainly abstract structures, which on the one hand are represented in public space (such as the vibrations on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz) and on the other hand appear as small figures only 10 cm in size. These are made up of geometric figures. The works made of polyacrylic also represent abstract structures. They are sculptures in which detailed and rough surfaces seem to slide into one another three-dimensionally and thereby merge into an abstract figure.

In addition to such works, there are also some fountains in Petermann's work. These are similar in that they are made up of two parts: In the upper part there is a bronze sculpture that is connected to the rest of the stone fountain.

In addition to sculptures, he also created watercolors , drawings and pictures in acrylic . There are also numerous poems on a wide variety of topics.
