origin

His parents were the Prussian major Wilhelm von Lilienthal (1823–1868) and his wife Klara, née Henrich (1832–1904).

Life

Lilienthal studied in Heidelberg , Göttingen and Berlin, where he received his doctorate in 1888 under Karl Weierstraß ( theory of curves, the arc length of which is an elliptical integral of the first kind ). In 1883 he completed his habilitation in Bonn . From 1889 to 1891 he taught at the College of Education in Santiago de Chile . In 1891 he became associate professor and in 1901 a full professor at the University of Münster , where he was rector in 1905/06. During the First World War he served as an infantry officer. He supervised 40 doctoral students at the University of Münster. In 1925 he retired. On June 27, 1902 ( matriculation number 3151 ) he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Lilienthal dealt with differential geometry, about which he also contributed an article in the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences .

family

Lilienthal married Maria von Haenel (* 1874), daughter of the Prussian Lieutenant General Georg von Haenel (1845–1918) in Münster on July 7, 1897 . The children Georg (* 1898) and Toska (* 1899) emerged from the marriage.
