action

The tractor driver Iwan lives in a Siberian village in the far north of the country. He is allowed to go to the seaside for a cure organized by his collective farm . He actually wants to take his two children with him, but his mother has reservations. So in the end he drives off with his wife Njura. In the train compartment, the two of them first make the acquaintance of an unfriendly gentleman, who meets them both ironically because of their origins and with whom the quick-tempered Ivan almost starts a fight. The man is finally taken to another compartment by the conductor. Ivan and Nyura now share their compartment with Wiktor, who is carrying a large suitcase that he opens with a knife. He pretends to have left the keys to the suitcase at home. In reality, however, he stole the suitcase. In it is cash, a bottle of vodka, which Wiktor opens immediately, and an expensive blouse, which he gives to Nyura as a present. All three now drink vodka until the unfriendly passenger reports Ivan to a police officer at the next train station. However, he only warns the naive Ivan about Wiktor, who gives both of them alcohol on an empty stomach in broad daylight - Ivan should be careful. Victor soon disappears with his suitcase and jumps off the moving train. The police are looking for him and Ivan and Nyura learn that they were dealing with a thief. You are questioned by the police about Wiktor and Nyura secretly removes the blouse you received.

Both have now become suspicious. When Professor Sergei Stepanov comes into her compartment, they both react defensively and Ivan finally accuses him of trying to steal from her. Only the conductor can reprimand Ivan and explains to both of them that Stepanov is a linguist. Stepanov even appeared on television and is recognized by other travelers. He is invited to another compartment and Ivan is allowed to come too. They sing and Ivan drinks a little too much alcohol, whereupon he becomes chatty, to the chagrin of Nyura. The next day, however, he forgot his antics from the day before. Stepanov invites both of them to Moscow for two weeks, from where they are to continue their journey south. Stepanov is particularly interested in the language aspects of the two “simple people from the country”. They go shopping in the big city with Stepanov's daughter and at the end of the day Ivan tells an episode from the life of a peasant on the television program Stepanov's.

Ivan and Nyura are finally going south and arrive at the sanatorium. The head physician is surprised that Ivan has brought his wife with him, as a stay at a spa is not a vacation trip. Ivan tries awkwardly to slip him money, but the doctor rejects the attempted bribe. In the end, Nyura can stay - she has moved into quarters with a doctor from the sanatorium and tells the relatives who have stayed behind in Siberia about the beauty of the sea and the area.
