In Sierra Leone , West Africa , freedom of religion is constitutionally established .

The largest religions are Islam and Christianity . Some residents practice the Islamic and Christian beliefs together. The Inter-Religious Council Sierra Leone , founded in 1997 , successfully ensures cooperation between religions. Religious violence is very rare.

Islam

77 percent of the population are (as of 2015) Muslims (70.1 percent in 2004). Most of them are of the Sunni faith . Islamic minorities are the Ahmadiyya and Shiites .

Christianity

In 2013, Christianity, the second largest religious community, belonged to 21.2 percent of the population, the majority of whom were Protestants of the Methodist faith and followers of evangelicalism . About nine percent of Christians are Catholics .

Others

Ethnic religions ( African religions ) only play a subordinate role in Sierra Leone. In 2013, 0.2 percent of the population stated that they were of a different faith (apart from Islam and Christianity). Only every 1000th Sierra Leonean is an atheist .
