The Islam is the dominant religion in the West African Sierra Leone . According to the 2015 census , 77 percent of the country's nearly 7 million inhabitants are Muslim . The majority of Muslims are Sunnis , with a not inconsiderable number following the Ahmadiyya .

For 2016, ISESCO named Freetown the capital of Islamic culture in the African region.

Religious leaders

Sheikh Ahmad Tejan Sillah , a follower of Shi'ism is the Chief Imam of the Central Mosque Freetown also Chairman of the Sierra Leone Council of Imams and Muslim highest in the country. The Ahmadiyya are led by Sheikh Mauvi Sadeeur Rahman .

With 85.1 percent, Islam has the largest proportion of the population in the northern province and at district level with almost 95 percent in Pujehun . The fewest Muslims live in the Western Area with 69.1 percent and in the Kono District with just under 54 percent.

Among the ethnic groups in Sierra Leone , Islam is particularly widespread among the Temne .

Mosques

Most mosques in Sierra Leone are non-denominational . The central mosque in Freetown is one of the two largest in the country. Regardless of their religion, the presidents of Sierra Leone traditionally attend Friday prayers in mosques on a regular basis. Another important mosque is the Muammar-al-Gaddafi Mosque , built in the 2000s and financed by the Libyan revolutionary leader Muammar al-Gaddafi .
