Renée Baker

Renée C. Baker (* 1957 ) is an American classical violinist, orchestra director and composer who is also active in the fields of creative jazz and new improvisational music.

Live and act

Baker is the concertmaster of the Chicago Sinfonietta , of which she has been a member since it was founded in 1987. In this role she has appeared at music festivals around the world, such as the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt and the Philomusica di Chicago Festival in Martigues, France . She has given numerous concerts as a soloist at the Chicago Cultural Center and at the Ravina Festival in Chicago she was the viola soloist in Don Quixote .

Since 1991 she has also directed her own ensemble FAQtet (Faith Action Quorum), which performs works by Afro-American composers. She is the Artistic Director of the Chicago Sinfonietta Chamber Ensemble , of which she has been a member since 1997. She also led the formations Mantra Blue Free Orchestra, Red Chai Watch, ProJect 6, Connoisseur Musica String Ensemble (classical music), POEMUSICI , Mimetic Cast, Wrinkled Linen , the experimental orchestra Blanche ' , the Renee Baker ArText and the Renee Baker Trio . She is currently the director and composer in residence of the Chicago Modern Orchestra Project.

Baker wrote compositions for various chamber ensembles, such as the Chicago Sinfonietta and the PionoForte Salon Series , which was performed at the Umbria Jazz Festival. She also worked as a coordinator in various music organizations in Chicago; She is a member of the executive committee of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and has organized several chamber music festivals.

As an improviser she played in Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Stringa , Karl EH Seigfried's New Quartet and the Galaxy String Quartet , as well as in the bands of David Boykin , Orbert Davis , George Lewis , Mwata Bowden , the AACM Great Black Music Ensemble , the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra .

Baker also appeared as a lyricist and concept artist. She lives in Bolingbrook , Illinois .
