Renate Winter
Renate Winter (born March 8, 1944 in Vienna ) is an Austrian judge . She has been a judge at the Special Court for Sierra Leone since 2002 and was President of this special court from 2008 to 2010. Since December 2016 she has presided over the successor court, the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone . Renate Winter is an expert in questions of juvenile criminal law, family law as well as questions of children's and women's rights, especially in connection with armed conflicts.
Life
Renate Winter studied law and French as an interpreter at the University of Vienna from 1962 to 1968 . After completing her studies, she began training as a judge and worked as a judge at the Vienna Youth Court from 1981 to 1996. From 1996 to 2000 she was an advisor to the United Nations in Vienna for the implementation of the Children's Rights Convention in developing countries. From 2000 to 2002 she worked as an international judge for the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo . In 2002 she was appointed judge of the Special Court for Sierra Leone by the UN Secretary General . From 2008 to 2010 she was president of this court. Renate Winter has dealt with children's rights and in the 1990s chaired several UN conferences on this topic. In December 2012 she was elected to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child for a period of four years . Membership began on March 1, 2013.
