Renato Rui (born June 7, 1979 in Maringá ) is a Brazilian handball player who is mostly used as a right back space player or right outside player . In his homeland he is better known under the name Renato Tupan . The nickname Tupan , which means God in Indian , was given to him by his mother. Rui has three brothers.

Career

The 1.89 m tall and 90 kg heavy left-hander began playing handball at school when he was nine. Initially he played a. a. also volleyball, but decided to throw himself at the age of 13. First he played for the Clube Olímpico Maringá in his hometown, after starting his studies in business administration in São Paulo for EC Pinheiros in the Liga Nacional. In the 2002–03 season he played for São Caetano and was voted the best player in his position.

He came to Germany through the mediation of his compatriot Bruno Souza , who was playing at Frisch Auf Göppingen at the time . His first position was in 2003/04 at the regional league team HSG Langenau-Elchingen . After one season he signed with the second division HSG Niestetal-Staufenberg , for which he played for the next year and a half. In January 2006, the second division TSV Hannover-Burgdorf signed him until the end of the season. After three years, the path led him to the 1st Bundesliga at Wilhelmshavener HV , with whom he had to relegate in 2007/08 . In 2009 he was signed by TuS N-Lübbecke , with whom he reached the Final Four in the DHB Cup 2009/10 . Then he returned to his homeland in São Bernardo. In January 2011 he signed again in Germany, with the Eastern third division team TG Münden . After a few months he moved back to Brazil. From 2011 to 2014 he played for Metodista / São Bernardo-SP. Since September 2014 he has been playing at Sydney Uni HC in Australia, with which he participated in the IHF Super Globe in 2014 and 2015 .

In the Brazilian national team Renato Rui made his debut in 1998. At the Pan American Games in 2003 he won the gold medal. He won the Pan American Championship in 2006 and 2008, each against arch rivals Argentina .

Rui competed in the 1999 , 2001 , 2003 , 2005 , 2007 and 2011 World Championships , with 16th in 1999 being his best placement.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he finished 10th, at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, 12th place. In total, Renato Rui made at least 133 international appearances in which he scored 231 goals.
