Renwick is a place in the Marlborough District on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

Originally called " Upper Wairau ", it was later renamed " Renwick Town " and then " Renwick ", the current name of the place, which was named in honor of the politician and local doctor Thomas Renwick .

geography

The place is located about 11 km west of downtown Blenheim and about 4 km south of the Wairau River . The Ōpaoa River flows north and the Omaka River flows past the place south. The New Zealand State Highway 63 runs from Blenheim in a westerly direction between the river and the town, essentially closing off the town to the south. There are only a few farmhouses on the south side of the highway . On the east side of the town, the New Zealand State Highway 62 branches off from State Highway 63 in a northerly direction, makes a bend to the west in the town, and then at the western end of the town in another bend to the north in the direction of Havelock .

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 2,118 inhabitants, 13.0% more than in the 2006 census.

economy

Renwick is located in the center of the wine region of Marlborough . The area is particularly known for Sauvignon Blanc , and wineries such as Isabel Estate and Forrest Estate are close by.

Education

With the Renwick School, the town has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2017, 535 students attended the school.
