Republic is a city in the US state of Washington with 954 inhabitants. It is the largest municipality in Ferry County and also its county seat (administrative seat).
history
Republic was founded in the late 19th century by prospectors who successfully explored the region for gold. In the 20th century there were rich gold mines in the area. The place, which was originally to be called Eureka , was officially registered under its current name in 1900; the name goes back to one of the largest local mine operators at the time, the Great Republic . The name Eureka was already given to a place in Clark County at that time . The city is now a little southeast of its original location.
To the north of the city is the Stonerose Fossil Bed , a site about 49 million years old fossils from the Eocene .
