Residency (British India)

A residency in British India was the district of a resident who advised and supervised local rulers (see Princely State ). He usually had the diplomatic rank of Political Agent (between consul general and envoy ). There were the following residencies: Haiderabad , Mysore , Jammu and Kashmir , Gwalior , Jaipur , Baroda and Mewar / Udaipur .

Usually, however, a political agent was responsible for several princely states. His district was the Agency . Examples: Baluchistan Agency, Rajputana Agency, Central India Agency.
