Revol Samuilowitsch Bunin ( Russian Револь Самуилович Бунин ; born April 6, 1924 in Moscow ; † June 3, 1976 ibid) was a Russian composer .

Life

Since Bunin's parents were enthusiastic supporters of the October Revolution , they called their son "Rewol" as an abbreviation for "Revolution". In his youth, Rewol Bunin discovered his interest in music. In 1941 he entered the Moscow Conservatory and studied first with Vissarion Schebalin , then with Dmitri Shostakovich composition. After completing his studies in 1945, he became Shostakovich's assistant at the Leningrad Conservatory . When Shostakovich had to give up his teaching activities as a supposed "formalist" in 1948 , it was not long before Bunin, like most of Shostakovich's students, had to leave the university. The occasion was a concert with his music, which was then attested to "formalistic tendencies". Until 1953 he worked for the State Music Publishing House. After that, he gave up a permanent position and worked as a freelance composer. His lifelong poor health (he was asthmatic ) led to his early death at the age of only 52.

style

Bunin was heavily influenced by his teacher Shostakovich. The subject matter, its development, the harmony , the polyphonic structures as well as a preference for rhythmic conciseness clearly reveal the model of Shostakovich. His music was not particularly conservative - it often shows a considerable wealth of dissonances - but neither did Bunin follow the latest trends in the musical avant-garde. At times he experimented with moderate twelve-tone technique , but this interest soon waned again. Bunin's style can be compared to that of Mieczysław Weinberg , another Shostakovich student. The conductor Rudolf Barschai was an important patron of his work . The focus of his work was on orchestral music. Bunin's music was never particularly well known, but it is of high quality.
