Reyhaneh Jabbari

Reyhaneh Jabbari (* 1988 ; † October 25, 2014 in Tehran , Persian ریحانه جباری) was an Iranian student who, despite international criticism, was executed for murder in October 2014 after seven years in prison.

background

In 2007, the then 19-year-old Jabbari, who worked as an interior designer in addition to her computer science studies , was hired by the 47-year-old former secret service worker and family man Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi to set up his office. According to Jabbari, Sarbandi offered her the job in an ice cream parlor pretending to be a doctor. She said yes. A few days later, however, this turned out to be a pretext. He didn't take her to a practice in his car, but to an empty apartment. Jabbari said he became suspicious of this, whereupon he attacked her and tried to rape her. In self-defense , she finally injured him in the back with a knife and fled. Although Jabbari still alerted an ambulance service, Sarbandi later died in the hospital.

After her arrest, Jabbari was held in Gohardasht Prison in Tehran and was convicted of murder in 2009 . However, human rights organizations and the United Nations were appalled by the trial. There was no fair trial. Among other things, condoms and narcotics were found at the crime scene without this being taken into account in the judgment. The initial prospect of an acquittal was dashed after the judge was replaced. Jabbari was not given access to legal counsel.

execution

Originally Jabbari was in September 2014 through the strand to be executed. However, this was postponed several times due to international protests. She was finally hanged in prison early that morning on October 25, 2014 . The day before, the authorities notified her parents to say goodbye to their daughter. For this they were given three hours of visiting time. They were not told the location of the execution, presumably to prevent protests. There are contradicting information about the notification after the execution took place : While the Tagesspiegel reports that their parents learned of their daughter's death via radio, Spiegel Online writes, citing uncle Jabbaris, who lives in Berlin, that the parents had been asked by telephone to remove the body to pick up her daughter.

Under Iranian law, the Sarbandis family could have overturned the death sentence and pardoned Jabbari. In return, however, they demanded that the rape allegations be withdrawn in order to restore the family father's honor. Jabbari refused this to the last.

International reactions

The case of the young woman sparked international protests. Iranian artists called for the death sentence to be overturned and 200,000 signed an online petition. Many media reported the case, especially shortly before the execution. In addition to human rights organizations and the UN, the US State Department and the EU condemned the execution of the death sentence and called for a review. Various attempts have been made several times to persuade Iran to initiate a new process. Most recently, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz , among others, tried in a letter to Ali Larijani to stop the execution of the judgment and to have the proceedings reopened.

Shortly before the execution of Jabbari, the special envoy of the United Nations, Ahmed Shaheed, announced that the number of executions in the Islamic Republic of Iran under the new President Hassan Rouhani had risen significantly. During his first year in office, 852 people were executed, around 200 more than in previous calendar years.
