The Rhön is a fuel transporter of the German Navy and belongs to the Rhön class . Their optical identification is "A 1443". It was put into service on September 23, 1977 and stationed in Wilhelmshaven . The Rhön belongs to the supply squadron .

Technical data and tasks

The ship has an operational displacement of 14,169 tons and can run at a speed of 16 knots. The loading capacity is around 11,500 cubic meters. The drive system has an output of 5,880 kW (8,000 hp). The crew consists of civilian forces and includes 42 people.

The ship is used to supply warships at sea. It has facilities for the sea ​​supply , with which it can hand over fuel and water during the journey.

history

From September to November 2007 the Rhön took part in the Standing Nato Maritime Group 2 in the Mediterranean under Captain Manfred Heers.

From August to November 2009 the Rhön took part in the Standing Nato Maritime Group 1.

From January to March 2012 the Rhön took part in the Standing Nato Maritime Group 1.

From March to June 2013 the Rhön was part of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1) which at the time was under the command of Flotilla Admiral Georg von Maltzan . The SNMG 1 was also part of Operation Active Endeavor .

From March to July 2014 the Rhön was in action under Captain Egon Rhauderwiek for Operation Atalanta in the Horn of Africa. She was protected by a Vessel Protection Detachment of the sea ​​battalion .

On October 4, 2016, the Rhön left Wilhelmshaven to take part in SNMG 1 again. During her participation in the permanent task force, the Rhön accompanied the Russian carrier association around Admiral Kuznetsov . The Rhön returned to its home port on November 30, 2016.

On August 12, 2017, the Rhön left Wilhelmshaven to participate again in the SNMG 1 run by a Norwegian Commodore . Visits to Helsinki and Rostock , as well as several Mediterranean ports are planned. The return is scheduled for December 12, 2017.

Due to machine problems, the two Rhön-class ships, the Rhön and the Spessart , were taken out of service in June 2018. DNV GL , which is responsible for ship safety, withdrew the operating license from the two tankers. They are slated to be repaired and remain in service until 2024.

In June 2019 the Rhön took part in the NATO maneuver BALTOPS 2019. For this purpose she was briefly relocated to Kiel.

From March to July 2020, the Rhön again took part in SNMG 1 (Standing NATO Maritime Group 1). For the first time, a sea supply maneuver was carried out with a class 125 frigate , the North Rhine-Westphalia .

Accidents

On October 23, 1988, the Rhön collided with the US destroyer USS Hayler , both ships were badly damaged, but no personal injury occurred.

On June 17, 2019, when a dinghy was launched, there was a serious accident at work in which four occupants (some seriously) injured themselves. The boat fell into the water of the Kiel harbor basin while it was being released.
