Rheder City Night

The Rheder City Night (also: Rheder City Night ) was a cycling event in Rhede .

The city night consisted of several circuit races in one evening, the climax of which was an elite driver race. The event took place on the Friday after the Tour de France ended every year from 1992 to 2012 .

In addition to the races, an extensive supporting program was offered in the city. Co-moderator at the side of Peter Mohr (1996–2012) was the former professional cyclist Marcel Wüst , who won the race in 2000. The greatest number of spectators was achieved with Lance Armstrong's victory in 2002, when 38,000 spectators lined the track. Due to financial bottlenecks, an entrance fee for spectators was charged several times, but in 2009 around 20,000 spectators were attracted. The Rheder City Night 2013 was suspended for the first time in 21 years due to excessive costs.

While in the first few years mainly amateurs took part in the race, more and more professional cyclists have been hired since the late 1990s. Local drivers Fabian Wegmann , Linus Gerdemann and Marcel Sieberg , for example, were frequent participants , but international drivers such as Alexandre Winokourow , Lance Armstrong and Ivan Basso have also been signed up. In 2012, 5 participants of the 2012 Tour de France took part in the main race: Ivan Basso, Dominik Nerz , Patrick Gretsch , Danilo Hondo and Christian Knees . The City Night 2012 was won by Christian Knees, ahead of Fabian Wegmann, Björn Schröder and Ivan Basso.
