Lhoist Germany Rheinkalk GmbH is a group of companies of the Belgian Lhoist Group , the world's largest manufacturer of lime and dolomite products. The company is based in Wülfrath in the Düsseldorf administrative region . The Flandersbach plant is also located here .
history
The RWTH Kalkwerke AG (later RGA lime AG) was established in 1887 by Wilhelm Schuller , Anton Winter and the union Maximilian founded. In 1993 the Belgian Lhoist group took part .
The Rheinische Kalksteinwerke in Wülfrath were founded in 1903 by August Thyssen to secure limestone deposits for steel production . Lhoist took over the company in 1997.
At the end of August 1944, in the hidden Hönnetal in the Emil 1 quarry of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Kalkwerke, the expansion of a gigantic tunnel system (code name Schwalbe I ) began, with the aim of securing the war-relevant mineral oil industry from destruction by Allied air raids.

The Flandersbach lime works of the Rheinkalk Group is the largest lime works in Europe. Here alone around 7.5 million tons of limestone are extracted and burned annually . The furnaces at the Flandersbach plant run on coal dust, gas and substitute fuels. Most of the lime produced is transported by rail via the Angertal Railway .
There is a need for lime in many areas of industry (e.g. steel production, construction , paper industry) and agriculture.
