The Rhenish Mission Church in Keetmanshoop is a church in Keetmanshoop in southern Namibia . It has been a National Monument since June 9, 1978 . It is the oldest building in the city.
The current Rhenish Mission Church was built in 1895 by the Nama under the supervision of Reverend Tobias Fenchel , a missionary of the Rhenish Mission Society , after the old building was destroyed around 1890. The natural stone building material had to be brought from the distant Lüderitz . The model for the church building was the home church of Fenchel in Gambach with its 30 meter high, square church tower.
From 1930, after another church was built, until around 1961, the Rhenish Mission Church was only used by blacks . In the following years until 1979 the church fell into disrepair before it was converted into a museum. In 1985 the city refurbished the church from the ground up.
The church still offers space for up to 1000 people.
