history

Until the end of the 19th century, the Rhine was a wild river with a constantly changing course . Therefore, the Werdenberger- and 1896-1906 the Rheintaler inland canal were built in 1882-1884 . In order to lower the gradient in the individual canal sections, three steps were to be built at Lienz , Blatten and Montlingen . Using these slopes for the power supply of the St. Gallen Rhine Valley was an important secondary purpose. In 1903 the canton of St. Gallen took the decision to build, and in early 1906 electricity was produced for the first time . The group of works consisted of the headquarters in Montlingen with 3 systems with 250 HP and the centers Lienz and Blatten with two identical systems. In 1911, the inland canal works became the property of the newly established electricity works of the canton of St. Gallen . But only three years later, the works passed into the hands of St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG. In 1927 the old systems had become obsolete. A new 540 HP system was installed in each headquarters. This produced 3.8 million kWh of electricity annually. With the renovation, the Lienz and Blatten plants have recently been monitored from the Montlingen headquarters. In 1988/89 these turbines were also out of date and were replaced by three Kaplan turbines . Today all systems work fully automatically and are controlled from the headquarters in Montlingen.

Lienz photovoltaic system

During the renovation in 1988/89, a photovoltaic system with an output of 3 kW was installed at the Lienz plant. During a tour of the St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG plant, visitors are given the opportunity to learn about the various types of renewable energy sources.

Idyllic location

The three plants have been historically renovated and are located in the idyllic recreation area of the inland canal, directly on a signposted bike path. Since the SAK is very committed to the preservation of nature in the vicinity of the plants, a fish ladder was built at each of the three plants to allow the lake trout to reach their spawning waters in the upper Rhine Valley.
