Schnabelriede ( Rhynchospora ) are a genus of plants within the sourgrass family (Cyperaceae). In Germany there are two types of white schnabelried ( Rhynchospora alba ) and brown schnabelried ( Rhynchospora fusca ).

description

Rhynchospora species usually grow as perennial, more rarely as annual, herbaceous plants . The upright stalks that stand together are triangular or stem-round. The leaves that are basal or distributed on the stalk consist of a closed leaf sheath and a simple leaf blade. The linear leaf blade is flat or canalicular.

Inflorescences of Rhynchospora colorata

The bracts are similar to foliage. The paniculate entire inflorescence is composed of several spiked or capillary partial inflorescences . The stalked or sessile spikelets (partial inflorescences) are narrow-ovate, ovate or ellipsoidal and can sometimes be somewhat flattened. The few to many single-nerved glumes are spirally overlapping like roof tiles or rarely arranged in two rows; three or four basal glumes are shorter than the others and empty. Either all flowers are hermaphroditic or in the inflorescence the lower ones are hermaphroditic and the upper ones are male or sterile. There are no to six, rarely up to 13, bloom bracts reduced to rough or smooth bristles . There are two or three stamens . The slender stylus ends in two scars.

The nuts are mostly obovate to ovoid, biconvex and their surface is structured differently or, more rarely, smooth.

Systematics

The first description of the genus Rhynchospora was 1805 Martin Vahl with the type species Rhynchospora alba (L.) Vahl . Synonyms for Rhynchospora Vahl are: Dichromena Michaux and Psilocarya A.Gray .

White Schnabelried ( Rhynchospora alba )

There are around 250 to 350 species of Rhynchopora . Here is a selection:

  • Weißes Schnabelried ( Rhynchospora alba ( L. ) Vahl ): It is widespread in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere.
  • Rhynchospora chinensis Nees & Meyen ex Nees : The range extends from India to East Asia, across the western Indian Ocean and to Hawaii. With two subspecies and one variety.
  • Rhynchospora colorata (L.) H. Pfeiff. , also called star dancer in German. The home is the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, French Guiana and Venezuela. The species is also occasionally kept as an ornamental plant.
  • Rhynchospora corymbosa (L.) Britton : It is native to the tropics and subtropics.
  • Rhynchospora faberi C.B. Clarke : The range extends from Japan, Korea and southeastern China to far-eastern Russia.
  • Rhynchospora fascicularis (Michx.) Vahl : The homeland ranges from the USA to Venezuela. With two subspecies.
  • Brown Schnabelried ( Rhynchospora fusca (L.) WTAiton ): Home is Europe and North America.
  • Rhynchospora gracillima Thwaites : Home are the tropics and subtropics of the Old World.
  • Rhynchospora malasica C.B. Clarke : The distribution area is western Malesia and ranges from temperate East Asia to China.
  • Rhynchospora rubra (Lour.) Makino : The home is the tropics and subtropics of the Old World. With three subspecies.
  • Rhynchospora rugosa (Vahl) Gale : The home is the tropics and subtropics. With four subspecies.
  • Rhynchospora submarginata Kükenthal : The range extends from tropical Asia to northern Australia.
