meaning

The "Rhythm of the Night" offered a platform for German-language discotheque music. Rhythmic hits from u. a. In the 1990s, Ibo , Wolfgang Petry and Olaf Henning received little attention in ARD's melodic hit programs. The combination of German hit and dance floor increased the importance of the so-called Fox hit or pop hit at the beginning of the 2000s to a new fad, which was mainly recognizable by the success of the singers DJ Ötzi , Tommy Fischer and Michael Wendler . WDR 4 noticed this development and presented the "Rhythm of the Night" as a special broadcast for this genre . Since 2016, the "Rhythm of the Night" was the only program in the WDR 4 program that broadcast German hits.

history

The broadcast started every four hours in summer 2002. At the beginning of 2003 it was taken over by affiliated broadcasters via the ARD night express (from October 2011: ARD Hitnacht ). Since July 2, 2017, the program has been broadcast on Sunday night from 0:05 a.m. to 6 a.m. Special elements of this program were the album tip, the DJ mix (approx. 20 minutes of hits “in the mix”) and the “last minute request” every half hour. In the first rhythm of the night of a month, a selection from the party and hit charts was broadcast until the end of 2008. Since February 7, 2010, the top ranked music titles of the DJ hit parade launched by Uwe Hübner have been played at the beginning of the month .

On January 14, 2018, the broadcast was stopped after almost 16 years due to a restructuring of the ARD night service (takeover of NDR 1 - Nacht).

Moderators

Initially, the program was moderated alternately by Michael Begasse and Bernd Brüggemann. In 2011 Silke Liniewski joined the moderation team, in 2015 Dominik Freiberger. In the anniversary broadcast for the 15th anniversary on June 11, 2017, Michael Begasse said goodbye to the rhythm of the night and Peter Kuttler took his place.

CD for the broadcast

Since 2004, double CDs have been released annually for the broadcast. They especially summarize party hits, remixes and maxi versions of current hits. This series includes recordings that were remixed especially for this series. These include u. a. the “Friesen-Mix” from Helene Fischer's “Mitten im Paradies”. Another focus is on the publication of German-language maxi-versions from the 70s and 80s that were not previously available on CD, such as B. the "Bisüberbeideohrenverliebte Maxi Version" of "Verliebte Jungs" by Purple Schulz or the "Long Version" of "Ich know what I want" by Udo Jürgens . In parallel to the CD releases, WDR organizes 4 so-called “release parties”, mostly in the Delta Musikpark in Duisburg. The 10th anniversary was celebrated with a 3-CD box and an open-air event in Essen in front of 25,000 spectators. This series has been paused since 2015.
