Ricardo dos Santos , called Ricardinho (born May 23, 1990 in Palhoça , Santa Catarina ; † January 20, 2015 in São José , Santa Catarina), was a Brazilian professional surfer .

Life

Dos Santos was considered a world-class tube or big-wave surfer and one of the most popular surfers in Brazil. At the Billabong Pro Tahiti 2012 in front of Teahupoo , he defeated eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater in round 3 and was just eliminated in the quarter-finals against eventual winner Mick Fanning . In this competition he was honored with the Andy Irons Award for the most dedicated achievement. His best placement in the Association of Surfing Professionals ranking was 62nd in 2012. In 2013, he won the Wave of the Winter competition . In November 2014, he appeared on the cover of the US sports magazine Surfer .

Ricardo dos Santos was the victim of a violent crime on January 19, 2015, the course of which there were various accounts. It is certain that dos Santos suffered gunshot wounds as a result of a dispute in front of the family estate not far from Guarda do Embaú beach in his birthplace of Palhoça. Luís Paulo Mota Brentano, a decommissioned officer of the Brazilian military police , who was 25 at the time of the crime , and his 17-year-old brother were arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion. Dos Santos was flown by helicopter to the regional hospital of São José not far from Florianópolis , where he underwent several emergency operations. Because of his critical condition, the doctors finally put him into an artificial coma . He died of serious injuries the next day. Dos Santos was buried the day after his death in the village of Paulo Lopes south of Palhoça. Brentano was sentenced to 22 years in prison for murder on December 16, 2016. Dos Santos' birthplace commemorates him with the international young surfing competition Ricardo dos Santos Pro Junior, which has been held since 2017 .
