Mick Fanning (2007)

Michael Eugene "Mick" Fanning ( nicknamed "White Lightning" (White Lightning) ; * 13. June 1981 in City of Penrith , New South Wales ) is an Australian professional surfer . Fanning has won the ASP World Tour three times so far - in 2007, 2009 and 2013 .

Childhood and youth

Fanning was born on June 13, 1981 in Penrith, New South Wales, Australia. He learned to surf at the age of five on the coast of Mount Gambier . When he was twelve years old, he and his family moved to Tweed Heads . He grew up with professional surfer Joel Parkinson in the Gold Coast / Northern Rivers region. Both went to the "Palm Beach Currumbin High School". In the coastal border area of New South Wales and Queensland , Fanning had access to the unusually strong surf in the north and south of Australia . There he started to make a name for himself. In 1996 he established himself as one of the top surfers in the top three of the Australian championship. Two years later, his brother Sean and surfer Joel Green died in a car accident.

Career as a professional surfer

After receiving a wildcard for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in 2001 , he won the most prestigious competition in Australia. He ended the 2002 season by winning the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay as a rookie of the year and World Qualifying Series (WQS) champion.

In 2004 he suffered a complicated Achilles tendon injury and a complete torn muscle fiber in his thigh . After a three-year rehabilitation phase, he became ASP World Champion in 2007 .

It began in 2007 with a win on the Quiksilver Pro, the first event on the Foster's ASP World Tour. On November 6, 2007, he won the Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil , with Taj Burrow and Kelly Slater coming . In the middle of the 2008 season he suffered a groin injury and slipped to eighth place at the end of the year.

In 2009 Mick Fanning took back the ASP World Championship on the famous Pipeline Reef Break near Oahu . A year later he won the Quiksilver Pro France. In 2012 he won the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach and the Billabong Pro Teahupoo for the second time. Then he won his third World Championship title in 2013 and directed the film Missing with filmmaker Taylor Steele . In 2014 he won the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in April, the J-Bay Open in July and the Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal in October.

At the Rip Curl Pro Bell Beach 2015 he had as many points (15.2) as Adriano de Souza two minutes before the end of the final . In the event of a tie, according to the rule, the winner is the one with the best single wave result. Since de Souza no longer got a wave with which he could outbid Fanning's best single wave result (8.17), Fanning won the ASP tournament for the fourth time. This was previously only achieved by Kelly Slater, Mark Richards , Lisa Andersen and Gail Couper .

On July 19, 2015, at the J-Bay Open 2015 final at Jeffreys Bay , he was lying on his surfboard waiting for the next wave when a shark knocked him off his board. Fanning was pulled underwater by his foot leash and tried to fend off the shark. When the leash broke, he managed to emerge. A few moments later the support boats and jet skis were there and brought both finalists to safety. For safety reasons, the host decided not to continue the final of the World Surf League. Fanning and Julian Wilson , his final opponent, were awarded second place. Fanning survived the incident unharmed, what he described as a "miracle".

In December 2015, Fanning came to Hawaii for the last surf contest as the leader of the Worldsurfleague. On the night before the final day, his older brother Peter died. Fanning entered the contest the following day and came third. However, his Brazilian competitor Adriano de Souza was able to win the event and secure the world title at the same time. Mick Fanning then decided to take a step back from the Worldsurfleague Tour and only surf selected events in 2016.

Private life

Fanning was married to model Karissa Dalton for eight years. They filed for divorce in January 2016. The reason for the divorce was given with Mick's activity as a pro surfer and the long trips that went with it. Karissa Dalton referred to herself as a "surf widow" during the divorce. The separation was amicable and the two still maintain a friendly relationship.
