Riccardo Cassano (born June 27, 1885 in Naples , † November 16, 1953 in Rome ) was an Italian film director .

Life

Cassano, who belonged to a noble family, came to Rome in 1910 to pursue a career in theater. In 1913 he was hired by the film company Cines as a script reviser. Two years later he presented his first works as a director; he also worked with Guido Brignone and Mario Bonnard and acted as a representative of Futurism in four films with Anton Giulio Bragaglia . In 1918 he became a director for one of the divas of the time, Bella Otero , with actor Gastone Monaldi .

Cassano's descent began with the rise of talkies; he was now employed in less important roles for films by Mario Mattòli , Carlo Borghesio and Enrico Guarini and made his last film in 1943, Se vuoi goder la vita, based on his own script, which was only completed after the war and was rarely shown. He was still active as a producer of documentaries , but most recently had to earn his living selling used books at flea markets.
