Millettieae is a tribe in the subfamily of the butterflies (Faboideae) within the legume family (Fabaceae). Their approximately 900 to 920 species are found mainly in the tropics and subtropics worldwide. Only Callerya also reaches temperate areas of China and Wisteria is also found in temperate areas of eastern Asia and North America. Some species and their varieties are used as ornamental plants .
description
Appearance and leaves
They are mostly woody plants that grow as shrubs , rarely trees or lianas . Only the genus Tephrosia rarely contains annual or more often perennial herbaceous plants .
The oppositely arranged leaves consist of a padded petiole and a mostly unpinnate leaf blade. On the leaf rachis , the up to 15 (three to forty) usually five pinna are leaflets usually in pairs opposite, rarely they are alternate; sometimes reduced to a leaflet. The stipules often fall off early; Stipules of the leaflets may be present.
Inflorescences and flowers
The inflorescences are structured very differently, but they are not elongated racemes ; the flowers stand together in several groups and these bundles are grouped together in pseudo-racial or pseudorispigenic total inflorescences. Sometimes the inflorescences are on leafless branches or directly on the main stem. There are usually cover sheets available.
The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and fünfzählig double perianth (perianth). The five sepals are fused and truncated or end with four to five calyx teeth. The corolla has the typical structure of the butterflies . The flags can have calluses at their base. The wings are free or adhere more or less strongly to the shuttle. The filaments of the nine or all ten stamens are fused together. The anthers are sometimes hairy. Usually a tubular disc is present. The only upper carpel contains one to twelve ovules .
Fruits and seeds
The sometimes angular legumes have woody or paper-like flaps and open or remain closed when ripe. The differently shaped seeds have a hard or woody seed coat (testa).
