The Richard Benz Medal for Art and Science is a medal donated by the city of Heidelberg . It is awarded for special services to the city of Heidelberg and is named after Richard Benz .

The foundation of the Richard-Benz medal was decided by the council of the city of Heidelberg on 28 October 1976 for the ten-year anniversary of the death of Richard Benz. The medal is made of bronze and bears the portrait of Richard Benz in half relief with his life data in inscription on the obverse . The Heidelberg City Council decides on the award of the Richard Benz Medal in a closed session. The decision on the award requires a majority of two thirds of all members of the municipal council. A maximum of 10 living people at a time can bear the medal.
