After attending the Innsbruck School of Applied Arts (1955–1961) and a subsequent two-year stay abroad in Switzerland, he decided on his return to Austria to work as a freelance artist. In 1969, a grant from the State of Tyrol enabled him to deepen his studies at the Brussels Art Academy and to graduate with awards in 1971.

Since the beginning of the nineties, Agreiter has been working almost exclusively with bronze casting , casting all works himself in his own foundry. In 2004 the artist decided to hand over his estate to the Ladin cultural center in the Ladin Museum "Ćiastel de Tor" in St. Martin in Thurn . In 2007 the Richard Agreiter Foundation was set up, which awards the Richard Agreiter Art Prize for Sculpture endowed with 10,000 euros every three years .
