Richard Balken (born November 20, 1914 in Solingen ; died 1995 ) was a German diplomat .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1934, Balken initially worked as a journalist for various newspapers. On May 1, 1933, Balken joined the NSDAP . In 1940 he was drafted into military service and was taken prisoner of war, from which he was released in 1946. From 1947 to 1952 he worked again in the journalistic field as an editor for various newspapers, including most recently as editor-in-chief of the Westdeutsche Rundschau .

In 1953, Balken joined the Foreign Service. In 1956 his first assignment abroad took place at the German embassy in Washington, DC , after which he worked at the headquarters in Bonn from 1959 to 1967 , where he was first in department 302 (disarmament and security) until 1962 and then in parliament and cabinet department until 1967 directed. In 1967 he was appointed German ambassador in Oslo , and in 1970 German ambassador in Jakarta . After working as ambassador for special purposes at headquarters from 1974 to 1976, his last assignment abroad as the German ambassador in Bucharest followed from 1976 to 1979 .

Balken was married and had two children.
