Richard Ben Cramer (born June 12, 1950 in Rochester , New York , † January 7, 2013 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American journalist and author .

Life

Richard Ben Cramer studied journalism at Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University . He worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer in the 1970s and 1980s . In 1979 he won the Pulitzer Prize for reports from the Middle East . In 1981 he became internationally known with his story about Bobby Sands . In 2000 he launched a successful biography of Joe DiMaggio . In 2004 he edited the Best American Sports Stories .

Richard Ben Cramer was married twice, his first marriage to Carolyn White, editor of the Sunday supplement of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
