Richard Ntomba Ekunde (born August 4, 1982 ) is a Congolese soccer player who has so far mainly played in Sweden.
Career
Ekunde started playing football in his home country at Kinshasa City FC . In 2002, like his club mates René Makondele and Yannick Bapupa, he moved from Kinshasa to Djurgårdens IF in Sweden . The club won the Swedish championship in 2002 and 2003 , Richard Ekunde, however, played no role and was rarely used in the Allsvenskan . For this reason, the club loaned him to the second division Åtvidabergs FF , where he was able to prevail as a regular player. With his achievements he also played his way into the national soccer team of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , where he played his first two international matches at the end of 2003 against South Africa and the Ivory Coast . In the game against Ivory Coast, Ekunde tore a cruciate ligament so that he was out for a long time. Therefore Djurgårdens IF extended the loan period with Åtvidabergs FF, who ultimately signed the player. In the Superettan he made the Allsvenskanklub GAIS Göteborg attention as a regular player . In early 2006 he moved within Sweden and also became a regular in Gothenburg. There he has a contract until 2012. In 2007, the club's supporters voted him Player of the Year.
Considered the Allsvenskan's best center-back, he is often compared to Real Madrid's Fabio Cannavaro .
