Richard Fresenius (born June 18, 1844 in Frankfurt am Main , † January 7, 1903 in Monaco ) was a German painter .

Life

Fresenius completed his apprenticeship as a lithographer and worked as such for four years. He then began to study painting under Jakob Becker at the Städel Art Institute in 1862 . In 1863 he went to Munich and worked there as a lithographer in order to be able to afford his studies at the art academy .

In 1866, Fresenius settled in Karlsruhe to study as a student of the Norwegian landscape and marine painter Hans Gude until 1872 . Since then, Fresenius has also developed a weakness for the maritime genre .

From 1872 Fresenius lived and worked in Kronberg im Taunus . He also soon joined the existing painters' colony there .

Fresenius went on many study trips, including a. to Norway , the North Sea , the Riviera and the Alpine countries . Connected u. a. with Anton Burger and Carl Morgenstern he remained connected to landscape painting ; his river and lake images also remained an important focus.

Fresenius spent the last years of his life in southern Europe, mostly in small coastal towns in Monaco. Richard Fresenius died in Monaco on January 7, 1903, at the age of almost 60.
