Richard Garnett (born February 27, 1835 in Lichfield , Staffordshire , † April 13, 1906 ) was an English librarian , poet and writer .

Life

Garnett was the son of Richard Garnett, a senior official at the British Museum . He completed his school days in Bloomsbury and in 1851, through his father's mediation, also got a job as an assistant librarian at the library of the British Museum . He reached the high point of his career there in 1875 when he was promoted to head of the large reading room.

After much preparatory work, Garnett acted as publisher of the General Catalog of Printed Books in 1881 and between 1890 and 1899 he also held the position of Keeper of Printed Books .

The editor Edward Garnett was his son, his wife, the translator Constance Garnett his daughter-in-law; the writer David Garnett his grandson.

His poem Where Corals Lie was set to music by the composer Sir Edward Elgar in Sea Pictures, op.137.

reception

Garnett was very linguistically gifted and translated works from the Greek, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese languages. For a long time he worked for the Encyclopædia Britannica and the Dictionary of National Biography . Throughout his life he published numerous articles, from literary history topics to reports from antiquarian fairs in various magazines and newspapers.
