Richard Godeffroy
Richard Max Victor Godeffroy (born August 26, 1847 in Vienna ; † October 22, 1895 there ) was an Austrian chemist .
biography
He came from the Huguenot family Godeffroy , which had excelled in shipping and overseas trade. His grandfather moved from Hamburg to Austria. His mother, Gabrielle, was born du Rieux .
After attending the Schottengymnasium , he studied pharmacy at the universities of Vienna and Giessen until 1868. From 1870 he was assistant at the University of Vienna and from 1871 head of the pharmaceutical school of the Viennese main pharmacists' committee. From 1872 onwards, he published the results of studies on the analysis of medicines and mineral waters every year. In 1876 he received his doctorate with Heinrich Will at the University of Giessen with the thesis Determination of the atomic weight of cesium and rubidium to the Dr. phil. In 1879/80 Wilhelm Exner won it for the project of the newly founded Technological Trade Museum in Vienna. He became a co-founder of the section for dyeing, bleaching, printing and finishing , which later became the section for the chemical industry , where he taught as a professor.
Godeffroy devoted himself to the chemical technology of wood, developed a new process for black staining and made attempts at wood pulp paper production. He was also the founder and first chairman of the laboratory of the General Austrian Pharmacists' Association.
He married Adelheid Ottilie Augustine Hrdlicka from Timisoara , who had studied piano with Theodor Leschetizky . Her daughter, Ottilie Helene Angela Godeffroy (1880–1971) became an actress, from 1899 under the name Tilla Durieux . Richard Godeffroy fell ill with cancer and had to give up his job in early 1895.
